The pope county old settlers association will meet the second and last Tuesday of each month at the pioneer room of the pope county museum. The informal group will meet those days from 1:00 – 5:00 pm. coffee and the group will provide snacks.
Any persons interested in being a part of the newly formed effort are invited
to just drop in. these will not be formal meetings nor will order be taken. The
members will discuss local historic items of interest, potential research
projects and updates on upcoming museum events.
It will give area history ‘buffs’ and genealogists access to personal accounts,
co-sharing of research and up to date county historic efforts.
2006 will be the 75th anniversary of the formation of the pope county historical society. There will be several monthly events at the museum in honor of the celebration. it is also the 40th anniversary of the present museum building. The museum was originally housed in the pope county courthouse. in 1966, the centennial year for the county, the ‘new museum’ was opened. Several old settlers are assisting in the various events and planning.
To be an‘old settler’, members are to be ancestors of folks who settled in pope county prior to 1899. However, historians and genealogists ‘new’ to the area are encouraged to take part. The group is an informal support group for the museum and historical society. All interested parties are invited to be involved and contribute. The name ‘old settlers’ is viewed as being an honor, a way of recognizing those that founded and settled the area we now so enjoy.
Projects being discussed are: annual reunion picnic – [mid July], cemetery tour, tour of pope county’s ‘notorious’ or ‘infamous’ happenings, map projects of pioneer trails and original creek & stream beds, town walk tours, old photo scanning day, data base for ‘old settlers’, log cabin project, myth or fact and various other preservation and identification efforts.
The old settler volunteers will provide ‘man power’ and expertise to widen the ability of the museum staff to complete and maintain ongoing preservation efforts and expand its capabilities to provide additional research support and insight.
Why not give it a try? Come when you can. Whether it be once or twice a month or once in a while, stop by. Can’t come for the whole afternoon stop by for coffee anyway. Whatever, everyone is welcome and encouraged to stop in. try it you’ll like it. Be a part of history.
Mark these dates on your calendar, Jan. 10 & 31, Feb. 14 & 28, March 14 & 28, April 11 & 25, May 9 & 30, June 13 & 27 and so on and so forth. Every second and last Tuesday of each month, hope to see you there.
